Summer is the one season where I prefer to be indoors and away from the sweltering heat.

Summer in Japan is marked with many firework festivals and competitions all across the nation. It’s like the Japanese have found a way to make summer more bearable by having something to look forward to throughout the month of July and August.

Back in 2017, my friends and I had a mini-vacation in Japan to catch the fireworks at Yokohama. Dressed in our Yukatas, we took an hour-Long train ride to catch one of the biggest displays for the night.

I was left mesmerised by the symphony of lights that I witnessed. Each ignition was thoughtfully choreographed so that the spectators have the time to appreciate its beauty; every single one of them.

Besides the fireworks, we got the chance to witness one of the biggest summer festival called the Tokyo Koenji Awaodori (高円寺阿波おどり) with up to 12,000 dancers and over a million visitors from all around the world.

It was heartening to observe families with intergenerational members keeping the tradition and culture alive by being part of the dance troupe. Apart from the unique dance moves, the participants were also proud to showcase their traditional costume comprising the Yukata, Geta and straw Amigasa hats. This shows that the Japanese are very proud of their culture and I am happy to know that they are preserving them well.
